Drepung Gomang Library, one of the reputed Buddhist library in South India where it is a source of large collection of rare Tibetan Buddhist scriptures, important commentaries and books on Five Major School of Buddhism, History, Poetry, Philosophy etc. Books and texts are made available for loan to every student at Drepung Gomang Monastery. The library charges very nominal fees for its many services. The aim of the library is to preserve all these works and make them available to the students and other scholastic interest people. All the staffs of the library are monk volunteers.

Reprinting of sacred Buddhist text in book format to make it available to the students.

Recording the great teachings of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and many scholars/teachers of Drepung Gomang Monastery and various monasteries and make them available to the students.

Creating a data/archive of the important sacred texts into CD.
 

Project undergoing and completed by Drepung Gomang Library:

  • Sanskrit diction and pronunciation class has started with qualified Indian Sanskrit teacher. 95 students with two sessions of 2 hours each. (3 nuns, 92 monks from Drepung Gomang, Gaden Jangtse, Sakya, Loseling) And Special Evening class for Scripture/texts teachers and library staff.
  • Special class conducted for three months on Tibetan astrology by scholar Namkha la. 160 students with two sessions of 1 hour each (3 nuns, 157 monks from monks from Drepung Gomang, Gaden Jangtse, Sakya, Loseling)
  • Publication of books on Commentaries of Great Kunkhen Jamyang Shepa is at the final stage of publication.
  • Editing work on Commentaries of Great Gungthang Tenpe Drome and Great Kunkhen Jigme Wangpo is currently going on at Library.
  • Publication of books on ‘17 Great Indian Scholars of Nalanda’ in collaboration with Namgyal Monastery. Editing work is currently undergoing at Drepung Gomang Library. With book release date on  6th July, 2016 (On the birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama).


PROJECT OF DREPUNG GOMANG LIBRARY

His Holiness the Dalai Lama has always urged the monasteries and various establishment to reach out to other centers, institutions, college and universities in India and all around the world so that this will benefit all those involved, especially to be the bridge between the ancient Nalanda Buddhist Philosophical thoughts and the modern education system, as well as to share views and thought with all faiths and the public in general.

1.Scholarship for language studies:

To introduce scholarship for ten monks who wish to pursue further studies in Hindi, Chinese and English language. Each selected monks will have to pursue the course for three years. Approximate cost in Indian Rupee for one year Rs.1,00,000 for one monk student. For ten monks for a three-year course, it will be approximately Rs.10,00,000/-

2.Printing of Sacred Text in book format:

To print out the collected works of great Gomang Scholar/master Thukse Ngawang Tashi into a book format so that monks can use it for their study reference. During his teaching at Labrang, he primarily taught from the writings of Great Jamyang Zhepa. Notes taken by various disciples on his philosophical teachings were originally circulated in seven forms, only three of which are available today. His writings in philosophy are highly valued by current Tibetan scholars and studies by the students. Printing cost approximately Rs.8,00,000/-

3.Interfaith seminars/dialogue/conference, resource person talks, workshops etc.

To invite scholars, and resource persons from various fields, religion, and faith to give workshops, to participate in seminars, interfaith dialogue, conference and training. Conducting three such events in a year Rs.4,00,000/-

4.Upgrading/new computers at Library Section:

Most of the Computers for the library’s Editing section, writer section and Gomang studio need to upgrade and replace with new computers. It will approximately cost  Rs.5,50,000/-

5.Special course to School and college students during summer/winter break:

To provide a study on Buddhism, Tibetan language, Tibetan grammar, science research and workshop,  etcs to school students and college goers during their School/college break Rs.2,50,000/- for a year
